Jan 21 Beadwork: Radical Practices investigates the beading practices of Southern Yukon First Nations (Canada) and the Ndebele (South Africa) in this unique international cross-cultural exchange. The exhibition consists of both historical and contemporary work from the Iziko South African National Gallery, Cape Town, South Africa as well as historical work from the MacBride Museum and contemporary work from the Yukon Territorial Government Permanent Art Collection both located in Whitehorse, Yukon. This exhibition brings together the work of two distinct cultural communities with a focus on the role and significance of beads in the construction of cultural, national and gendered identity of Southern Yukon First Nations and the Ndebele from South Africa.
